How To Avoid Getting "Fatter" With Age
The latest studies show we might not be getting “fatter” because our metabolism slows down with age, but, rather…our metabolism slows down with age because we’re getting “fatter”. The reason we’re getting “fatter” as we age might have to do with becoming less insulin sensitive.
Insulin is a fat storage hormone that is secreted by the pancreas when we eat carbohydrates to regulate blood sugar. Insulin sensitivity refers to how responsive our cells are to insulin. Studies have shown that we become less insulin sensitive as we age, leading us to need more insulin to regulate our blood sugar levels, and causing us to become “fatter”.
The good news is that we can help our bodies maintain insulin sensitivity as we age by partaking in the following:
Get more sleep
Exercise
Lose weight
Avoid trans fat
Add cinnamon to your food
Eat more veggies
Add turmeric, ginger, and garlic to your food
Reduce stress
Avoid refined flour, liquid carbohydrates, and starches
Eat more fiber
Drink green tea
Avoid sugar- watch fruit intake
Low insulin sensitivity may be making us “fatter” as we age, but there are things we can do to naturally increase our insulin sensitivity.
