How To Use Visualization For Weight Loss Success

The practice of visualization goes back eons. It was used for spiritual and practical purposes by everyone from the Ancient Greeks to Native Americans. For example, Native American dances before a buffalo hunt or a battle were actually very empowering group visualizations. Today, this goal setting practice is widely used in professional athletics, business, and education. Absolutely everyone can use it!

The visualization process goes directly into our subconscious mind- where the vast majority of our actions are rooted. As we visualize ourselves reaching our weight goal, we create a positive feeling that becomes wedded to that goal. So, anytime we think about reaching that goal, we feel good rather than uncomfortable or anxious. When we encounter difficulties on the way to reaching our goal, we can picture ourselves succeeding and become flooded with positive emotion-the kind that propels us forward.

When we visualize, our brain creates neural pathways that lead to our eventual success. That means, our brain functions on a more efficient level to create the outcome we want. For example, when an athlete sees herself winning a race from start to finish, it becomes easier for her to actually win a race. After we visualize something, our brain reads the goal as something we’ve already accomplished, which creates comfort, confidence, and a pathway to success.

Visualization works best when we’re in the Alpha brainwave state. Alpha refers to the brain waves we experience when we’re meditating or sitting quietly in our backyard. It’s a state of relaxation and openness. Choose a time that works best for you and when you won’t be disturbed. 10 minutes, twice per day is a great way to start your visualization practice.

Allow your mind to fully relax, make sure the temperature is right for you, and that you’re comfortable overall. This will ensure your experience is deep and transformational. Next, dwell on the details of you having accomplished your goal. The more specific, the better. Get emotionally involved with your picture. Remind yourself that this outcome is what you truly desire.

Visualization puts success at the forefront of our mind. When we maintain a clear image of what we want, our mindset becomes healthy and productive. It is an energizing and clarifying activity that allows us to let go of past failures and helps us to organize our mind. It is a way to slay our weight goal and create anything else we want for our future.
