What's All the Buzz About Becoming Fat Adapted?
Fat adaptation is the normal, preferred metabolic state of humans. That's why we have fat- it's a reliable source of energy. However, because we eat high glycemic foods and eat too often, most of us are "sugar burners", which leaves us hungry, drained, dependent on food, and unclear in our thinking.
The characteristics of "sugar burners":
When a sugar burner goes two, three, four hours without food, they get ravenously hungry.
A sugar burner can't effectively access dietary fat for energy. As a result more fat is stored, than burned.
A sugar burner depends on glucose, which is a fleeting source of energy. We aren't able to store much glucose, so we end up needing to eat often.
During exercise, sugar burners waste their glycogen on efforts that fat should be able to power.
The benefits of becoming fat adapted:
able to effectively burn stored fat for energy throughout the day. (If you can handle missing meals and are able to go hours without getting ravenous and cranky (or craving carbs), you're likely fat adapted.
able to effectively oxidize dietary fat for energy. (Use fat for fuel)
have plenty of accessible energy on hand, even if lean.
rely more on fat for energy during exercise, sparing glycogen for when really needed.(A fat adapted person doesn't need to carb load.)
able to think more clearly
You can become fat adapted by eating fat in place of high glycemic carbs in our diet, and by eating less often. Ultimately, fat adaptation means metabolic flexibility, and less dependence on food.
