How To Reduce Your Stress Response For The Weight Loss (And Relationship) Win!

Stress is a part of our everyday lives. It can’t be eliminated, but keeping stress at a manageable level is a worthwhile goal. When stress levels are manageable we don’t need to turn to food, alcohol, or other kinds of disrespectful behavior (towards self or others) as a release.

The following are ways we can keep stress at a manageable level throughout the day:

  1. Deep breathing. Allow the lungs to breathe in as much oxygen as possible, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale deeply through the mouth.

  2. Progressive relaxation: Tense each muscle group for 5- 7 seconds and then relax for 20 seconds. Notice the difference in sensation.

  3. Passive relaxation: Concentrate on the feeling of relaxation in each muscle group

  4. Meditation: Gain mastery of your attention by focusing on an object in the room you’re in and slowly recite the name of the object in your mind. Set your timer for however long you decide to meditate. Gently guide your attention back to the object when it wanders.

  5. Mental imagery: Play soft background music and select a relaxing image from you imagination to concentrate on. Set a timer according to the length of time you decide on.

  6. Exercise: Physical exercise provides an outlet for the tension produced by the body. Equilibrium is often restored after moderate to intense exercise that results in relaxation and revitalization.

Unmanaged stress results in anxiety & depression, which leads to maladaptive behavior- and unfavorable results. Do yourself a huge favor, and take relaxation breaks throughout the day. You will feel much more clear headed and in control of your behavior and results!
